Following a robust national recruitment process, Mr Knight was selected from a highly competitive field of experienced headteachers and senior leaders from high-performing schools. He will take up his post on 1 April 2026.
Mr Knight brings extensive experience and a track record of significant impact in education, both as a Principal and executive leader. He has worked for over 15 years with Oasis Community Learning, one of England’s largest academy trusts, and currently serves as a Regional Director, overseeing a number of secondary schools in the Bristol area. He has previously led high-performing schools in Bristol, London, and New Zealand.
A passionate advocate for selective education, Mr Knight has a strong personal and professional commitment to the grammar school system, having experienced it firsthand as a parent of children in local grammar schools. He is excited to build on Marling School’s many strengths and to secure its position as one of the highest-performing grammar schools in Gloucestershire and a leading selective school in England.
Marling School is currently led by Mr Duncan Cook, Chief Executive Officer of CBAT, who is serving as Acting Principal. An experienced Headteacher and executive leader, Mr Cook will work closely with Mr Knight to ensure a smooth and carefully planned transition when he takes up post. Under Mr Cook’s leadership, Marling School has continued to build on the record results achieved last summer, providing a strong and exciting foundation for further growth as the school embarks on its next chapter under Mr Knight’s leadership.
Duncan Cook, Chief Executive Officer of CBAT and Acting Principal of Marling School, said:
"This has been a hugely important appointment for Marling School, and I am absolutely delighted that Peter will be joining us as Principal. The recruitment process attracted an exceptionally strong field, but Peter stood out for his clarity of vision, depth of experience, and understanding of what makes Marling such a special school. I am confident he is the right leader to take Marling forward and build on its strong academic foundations. I look forward to working closely with him to ensure continuity and a smooth transition."
Peter Knight, Principal Designate, said: “I’m absolutely delighted to be taking on the role of Principal at Marling School. I’m passionate about ensuring every student can thrive academically and personally. My vision is to build on Marling’s proud tradition of excellence by embracing innovation, strengthening community partnerships, and preparing our students to succeed in an ever-changing world.”
Mr Cook will continue in his role as Acting Principal until Mr Knight takes up post, working closely with colleagues to ensure continuity, stability and a smooth handover. Lift Schools will continue to provide additional school improvement support during this period, working in partnership with CBAT to support Marling School’s ongoing success as the school prepares for transfer later in the academic year.
