Marling Sixth Form commits to co-education

Girls to join Marling Sixth Form for the first time
Read the story...

Marling School is admitting girls into the sixth form for the first time in its history. New students will join a thriving sixth form, this year ranked in the top 15% of A Level providers nationally for Value Added.

Previously, girls have enrolled in Stroud High School and joined a collaborative sixth form, but now they can apply directly to join Marling School.

Marling’s Headteacher, Dr Stuart Wilson, is excited about the opportunities this offers:

‘I firmly believe that a co-educational sixth form offers the right learning environment for our A Level students.

Our current students benefit from outstanding teaching and they achieve positive Value Added results at A Level year-on-year. I want to extend this opportunity to as many other young people as possible and would encourage boys and girls from across the area to join us in September 2019.’

This year’s students were awarded another excellent set of A Level results, meaning that over the past 5 years 36% of A level grades have been A* to A, 66% A* to B and 85% A*to C, with a total pass rate of 99%. This year 14.4% of grades were at A*.

As well as outstanding attainment, Marling is particularly proud of its year on year positive Value Added score, that this year placed it in the top 15% of A Level providers nationally. The Value Added measure compares students’ final A Level grades with their predicted grades and awards a positive value if students achieve higher than their predictions. Overall this means that sixth formers studying at Marling have an excellent chance of achieving their full potential.

Marling Sixth Form offers an unusually broad and flexible choice of subjects. Students can select from more than 30 different A Levels along with exciting breadth options such as EPQ, Creative Writing, Geology, Classics, Sports Coaching or the Gold Duke of Edinburgh award. In addition to academic study, sixth formers also benefit from a wide range of extra-curricular options, including Sports, Drama and Music, Publishing and Debating, Particle Physics, Dissection and Microscopy.

Over this coming year the sixth form team will be working closely with local schools to ensure students are aware of everything the new Marling Sixth Form can offer. In recent years, more and more students from schools around the area have chosen to study A Levels at Marling, with up to a third of sixth form students joining the school for the first time in Y12.

Hugo Winkfield said, ‘I joined Marling Sixth Form from Deer Park School and found it a welcoming and supportive place to study. I made new friends easily and was given lots of opportunities to develop inside and outside the classroom.’

The Sixth Form Open Evening on 8 November, 5-8pm, offers a good opportunity to find out about sixth form life, meet current students and teachers and learn more about choosing A Level subjects. Details will be available soon on the new Sixth Form website: www.marlingsixthform.org.
